For most apps I am not receiving notifications on my phone on purpose.
If you need me today or tomorrow:
- SMS / Regular Phone Call (I don’t receive a notification for a missed Whatsapp phone call)
- If you tell me I can add you to a specific Signal notification profile where I do receive notifications. This means you then won’t be able to use Signal to send me regular messages.
- Come by (you can ring or knock anytime)
For non-time sensitive messages:
- E-mail (I love emails!)
- Whatsapp / Signal
- Mail <3
I do sometimes delete Whatsapp for 1-2 months and will never receive messages you sent during this period. My profile picture might indicate it, but if you need a reply - e-mail or phone call is the way to go.
Sometimes my Whatsapp last seen might make it seem like I was recently active - I use the contact app on my phone to select a specific person and then only read their message. (For example when meeting someone) I even use this for groups - so don’t assume I’ve seen you’ve even sent me a message.
Currently, being an organizer, I do tend to check my whatsapp a few times a day - but I am planning to bring it back to 0.5 times a day so I want to already start teaching people how I use it.
I am partly open to change my messaging style to accomodate for others, especially in new relationships while they are forming because the communication is so crucial in this phase. I will most likely establish a boundary later.
Voice messages are very welcome but for questions that need precise answering text is preferable.
I have accounts on these services but am not actively reachable on them:
- Discord
- Telegram
- Element
Why?
I could name a million reasons, but here’s a few.
- Notifications are the poison to mindfulness.
- I do not wish to have all the stories of my boss, my father, my friends playing in my head all the time. Especially not when being with someone - I’d rather have my attention be with them fully.
- In general I wish to minimize phone time.
- I feel alienated by other people using their phones and wish to reduce it myself. Especially in public transport.
